This summer, I had the privilege of being the official photographer for Spicer’s Garage Band Camp. The camp, now in it’s tenth year, is run by Spicer’s Music and brings together kids 8 to 18 for a couple of magical weeks each summer. Young musicians are divided up into rock bands and/or praise bands by skill and by instrument type. Then, they get down to business. In a few short days, they learn what it takes to play in a group, learn covers, write original music, and then put a concert that will knock your socks off.
In the interest of full disclosure, my kids attended this camp for years and now they are counselors. I have seen first-hand, the miraculous transformation that happens between day one, when a bunch of solo musicians arrive, sleepy-eyed and tousle-haired, and day five, when they are connecting as a band and making music together. Truly, they live up to their slogan. Spicer’s Garage Band Camp: Where Kids Rock.
